This isn’t a sanitized and chipper blog post on motherhood, and it is not lamenting egregiously on the challenges of it either. This is about my experience learning how to breastfeed as a first-time mom and some of the pitfalls and triumphs. I hope that by reflecting on these challenges, other first-time mothers can feel more prepared to take on the challenge because I did not do ANY research on breastfeeding before childbirth. Firstly, I thought I would be unable to breastfeed because of my past medical history. I figured the hours spent researching would be a waste and didn’t bother. Second, I thought it would be more of a simple and intuitive experience if I could breastfeed. I was wrong on both notions.
My biggest mistake thus far was not trusting my body and my baby to work synergistically. I wish I could have rested in God’s female design much sooner than I did. Six weeks in, I reached a breaking point and knew it was time to submit to God and trust in Him regardless of whatever outcome my lactation journey would result in, be it nursing, pumping, supplementing, or formula feeding.
